3rd open house – announcement

Those who have been following the blog may have heard about or even attended our 1st open house in January 2011 and/or 2nd open house in October 2011.

We are about to close up the walls in the 1st floor with sheet rock. Before doing so, we thought we’d schedule another open house to let you investigate and see the various green building strategies up close.

Open house dates:

Wednesday 02/22 – 5:00pm till 7:00pm

Saturday 02/25 – 10:00am till 3:00pm

What can you expect?

You’ll see a green building rehab project that includes a wide range of energy efficient strategies, all of which make it more affordable to maintain and operate a building.

Here are some results for the already finished and occupied 1500 square foot garden apartment:

  • Average winter gas use (heating + cooking): Less than $90/month
  • Average winter electrical use: around 220 kWh (or less than $40/month)

And we are not done yet!

If you plan to stop by, please leave a comment, so that I get a rough count.

See you on 02/22 or 02/25!

Marcus and his wife Cathy purchased a 100+ year old masonry two-flat in the City of Chicago to start a new pilot project – a deep energy retrofit. He is a Registered Landscape Architect with a horticultural degree from the School of Horticulture at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Sheffield, UK. Marcus developed his first landscape based sustainable pilot project at 168 Elm Ave. in 2002, and has also worked on a number of LEED certified projects. In that process he expanded his expertise from landscape architecture to building science, which continues to grow and which he applies to his own home.

  1. I am a professor in the College of Architecture at IIT. I am currently running a studio that is engaged in a retrofit design of a 1909 brick single family home. I would like to stop by tomorrow if possible. Where is the building located?

    Thanks!
