The basement had a small 2 to 3 bedroom unit, with a small kitchen and bathroom (see also image in 05/18/2009 post). After discovering the layers of cover ups as well as some mold, moisture and water problems, we decided to gut the whole basement. The task at hand is to remove all exterior wall covers, interior walls and the ceiling. It allows us to find out about all and any problems that there may be and let the basement footings dry and air out.
I had my problems and challenges in this deconstruction process, among them metal lath in the ceilings and a myriad of utilities I had to work around. But I have progress to report: the basement is almost completely opened up.
It is amazing how the space has changed from these small, darkish rooms, into this large, airy and light-filled space.
